Melbourne Cup Carnival Style Guide

Key details to remember

Headwear is a must for ladies, whether it be a hat, fascinator or headband. Big trends this season include boaters and fedoras, and metal or leather look crowns.

For the men, a sharp looking suit with dress shoes is your best bet. The Melbourne Cup is one event you can definitely get away with sporting a hat, so why not? Complete your look with the race day flower. You can even tie in the colour of the race day flower with your shirt or tie.

At this year’s Myer Spring Fashion Lunch, Cam McEvoy gave guests some advice, “even though [you and your partner] are dressing as 2 people, you’re one ensemble”.

AAMI (Victoria) Derby Day

Guests will traditionally wear black and white on Derby Day. For the ladies, varying textures, patterns and styles are often used to bring something extra to their monochrome ensembles. A polished white on white look is a good alternate to the common LBD. Men will often opt for a grey morning suit on Derby Day, however a black suit paired with a white shirt is always a safe option.

Emirates Melbourne Cup Day

‘The Race that stops a Nation’, and one of Melbourne’s biggest parties! The festive mood of the day carries through to the outfits on Cup Day. This is the day where race goers can be bold and bright, and show off their individual style and statement pieces. Men will usually stick to a smart suit, and a coloured tie to complement their partners outfit.

Crown Oaks Day

Traditionally known as ‘Ladies Day’, Oaks Day is all about looking glamorously feminine. For the ladies, step out it something that embodies your own style. Floral and lace designs made up of delicate fabrics are ever-popular. A navy suit is the go-to option on Oaks Day for the men.

Stakes Day, known as ‘Family Day’ is a day for the little ones to shine. As the day that wraps up the Melbourne Cup Carnival, racegoers can have a some fun with their outfits, with a relaxed yet festive theme prevalent.
