Emirates Melbourne Cup Day Wrap Up
Guests from all over made their way to Flemington Racecourse on the 1st Tuesday of November, to check out the food, fashion, and above all – The Race That Stops A Nation. The clouds and the drizzle certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of racegoers on this iconic day in Melbourne. Guests stepped out with a smile, sporting their most bold and brilliant race day attire.
History was made when Almandin, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, took out first place in a thrilling finish. 16 years since his last Melbourne Cup triumph, McEvoy said afterward’s “Gee, he travelled well. How lucky am I mate? The elation, the elation is unreal mate.” The win also mark Llyod Williams’ fifth victory as an owner.
Almandin was shadowed along the straight by Heartbreak City, who came in close behind, followed by Hartnell who claimed third place.
A great show of sportsmanship, Moreira and McEvoy shared a moment of congratulations after such a nail biting finish.
The fashion stakes also stopped the nation this year… Bright colours, big hats and bold statements. Both Jen Hawkins, face of Myer, and Stephanie Smith, Fashions on the Field ambassador, stepped out in backless red showstoppers. This year was all about the statement sleeves, exquisite crowns and dainty details.
It wasn’t just in the Birdcage we witnessed some incredibly stylish ensembles, the Home Straight Enclosure guests stepped out in style for day 2 of ‘Styles on the Straight’, which debuted in 2016.
Our winner, Shane Harcombe, won over the judges and the crowd, looking dapper in his revamped wedding day suit, which was over 30 years old.
