2016 AAMI (Victoria) Derby Day Wrap Up
The gardens were freshly manicured, and the sun was shining. Derby Day racegoers were in for a day of great racing and monochrome fashion paradise to kick off the Carnival.
As guests filed into the Home Straight Enclosure, they were greeted with sparkling and morning tea. Mercury Principle Events were glad to welcome back many familiar faces this year.
Our caterers, Atlantic Group, wowed with another delicious menu, and their staff kept guests fed and hydrated throughout this beautiful spring day.
2016 marked the debut of ‘Styles on the Straight’, drawing a greater response than expected. Many guests got involved in the fun, strutting their stuff in the show, or cheering on from the sidelines.
Over on the other side of the track, we saw some incredible black and white fashion statements. Melbourne Cup veteran Bec Judd opted for an all-white look, paired with an on-trend gold crown. Fresh faces Elyse Knowles and Nicole Trunfio looked striking in all black, along with Fashions on the Field ambassador Stephanie Smith.
And now for the moment all racing enthusiasts were waiting for, the AAMI Victoria Derby! Prized Icon, ridden by Glyn Schofield, stole favourite Sacred Elixir’s place as number one, with Sacred Elixir coming in second, followed by Inference.
The race also marked a historic moment for the Cummings family, with James Cumming, Grandson to racing great Bart Cummings, becoming the fourth generation to train a Victoria Derby winner.
